Practice Background

Bassett Road Surgery is one of 3 practices in Leighton Buzzard, a canal-side town with a population of 48,000 that lies equidistant from Milton Keynes, Aylesbury and Luton. The practice cares for 17,500 patients from recently extended and renovated premises and dispenses to a small proportion of this list. We pride ourselves on our ethos that all our patients deserve excellent holistic care, irrespective of their circumstances or background and to enable we employ a Complex Care Nurse to coordinate the care of our most vulnerable patients in a proactive and supportive way. We provide medical care for those experiencing homelessness in South Bedfordshire and are the Medical Officers for the local rehabilitation beds. We also host the Citizen Advice Bureau, Community Alcohol Liaison Service and a Mental Health Link Worker on site. We train medical students from the University of Buckingham Medical School, Imperial Medical School, and GP trainees from schemes in Milton Keynes and Aylesbury. We are a forward-looking organisation and have in recent years developed a number of innovative roles to meet the changing needs of our patients as best as possible. We have a Complex Care Matron who coordinates the care of our most complex and vulnerable patients and an Educational Matron who champions education and personal development at every level of the organisation. The role will comprise a combination of face to face and telephone consultation work managing patients with respiratory disease and/or diabetes, as well as optimisation of medication, anticipatory medication and polypharmacy. There will also be time allocated to more general reviews of medication. The role will also involve clinical audit, leading the practice towards cost-effective prescribing within its allocated budget and through working towards achieving the targets of the CCG’s Prescribing Incentive Scheme. We anticipate that the role requires 8-10 sessions per week but would be willing to review this for the right candidate.
